The “L”

13 05 2010

In my previous post, I talked about my dslr rig and how audio plays an important role in delivering good videos.

Now, here’s something that will improve image quality significantly. I present to you my 2nd L lens ever, the great canon 50mm f/1.2. Big thanks to David Cheok who helped me get this lens from Ed Noorislam.

Here’s an iphone picture of the first image I took using the lens right after I got the lens (13/5/10), though you can’t really see the quality of the picture.

Wide open at 1.2

I tested the 50mm on video mode, and it was just amazing! I really love the colors, sharpness and the bokeh… Will try to post the video soon. In the mean time, here’s a still photo prior to shooting the video of my daughter.

Another lens that I got recently was one that I’ve always wanted. It is the canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L. I got this from a forum member (bruneiforever forum) nick named Kulimpapat and this is my first ever L lens. This lens should help you during those moment where you’re recording video but you’re stuck with a prime lens and wished you had a decent zoom lens. At 24mm, it is not that wide and at 70mm, it is not that tight, but at both ends, it is sufficient.

Here’s another iPhone picture from the 24-70mm.

I will try to post some pictures from these lenses soon. And in the coming posts, I will be talking more about video related equipments that I’ve gathered in the past months. In particular, I’ll be talking about my new Go Pro Hero HD cam, JVC HM100, the slider (similar to the glidetrack), Azden 325ULT wireless mic, and the one I’m really excited about, my new ProArm crane (the ProArm crane package is on it’s way to Brunei, and it is estimated to arrive in the next 2 weeks). So stay tune for further updates from me and expect to see sample videos in the coming weeks.

The Shape (The experiment part 2)

15 01 2010

Here’s a short film Adam and me made sometimes last month. This was done as part of our experiment with storyboarding, DOP and equipment. We were only using my 500D with 50mm f/1.8, 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 and Pentex 135 f/3.5. Only available lights were used. We got the chance to try out the my DIY mini dolly and the new glidecam we just acquired. I think it took us about 6 hours to get the whole story done. Could’ve been better if we had done pre-planning before shooting hahaha but it was all good and fun.

DIY Mini Dolly

12 01 2010

I managed to do finish another DIY project. This time, I was making myself a DIY mini dolly using 1/2′ rails, small angle iron and my rollerblade bearings! Here’re are iphone pictures of the dolly.

And here’s a quite edit I made.

I’m currently learning/working on color correcting pictures/videos and this is one of the look I came up with.

I also tried to get certain looks direct from camera using custom WB and this is one of the pictures that I like. 500D+50mm f/1.8.

Canon 5D MkII Short Film

21 02 2009

I got to try my brother’s new 5D MkII a couple of nights ago. I was just messing around, getting test shots with my gf, without having anything set in mind. It was just a random shoot, without having any additional lights or set up done. You can even see soo many distracting things on the table and around, like I said, no prior set ups were done.

I did the post in FCP, but it was just simple cuts and re-arranging the clips. No color correction was done. Clip you see is actually straight from the camera, with WB adjusted to about 3200-3400 to make the scene cooler.

Canon 5D MkII with 16-35mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8.

Tell me what you guys think. Thanks.
